Spring is slowly beginning to make itself felt, with the mild weather gradually settling in... towards summer!
We're looking forward to soaking up the sunshine, opening our windows to let in the spring breeze and air out our homes. What a pleasure it is to say goodbye to our boots and winter outfits and welcome our charming shoes and summer wardrobe. There's a real desire for renewal!
On this beautiful spring day, I'd like to take this opportunity to share some tips on how to improve wardrobe organization. Did you know that organizing your clothes and accessories has a positive impact on your daily life? In the hustle and bustle of life, busy schedules and work-life balance, the aim of space organization is to set up organizational systems tailored to people's spaces, tastes and lifestyle habits. Thanks to this method, it's easier to find your personal belongings on a daily basis, and to know exactly where to put them.
Wardrobe organization simplifies our daily clothing selection, reduces clutter and promotes a sense of calm and control in our spaces, our home.
First of all, as long as we want to organize a wardrobe, we have to start by de-cluttering it: we take out all its contents, which we can put on the bed, we stack them by category, which allows us to visualize what we have as inventory, as we say, “we have to make a bit of a mess to then order it all!” Then you try on each piece and keep only the clothes that make you feel beautiful and good.
According to stylist Nathalie Fortin (www.nathaliefortinstyliste.com), sorting may seem like a trivial task, but it has benefits that go beyond the physical organization of space - it's a real energy boost! Our clothes are often associated with memories, emotions or past experiences. By doing a wardrobe detox, we have the opportunity to get rid of the clothes that no longer inspire us: a real emotional release!
It's time to say good-bye to the clothes that don't fit anymore, the “just in case” clothes, the ones that are too big, too small, the ones we feel stuck in and uncomfortable in. For clothes in need of repair, save them and put them in a bag for quick delivery to your friendly seamstress.
Nathalie's affirmation: Imagine, every time you open your wardrobe, you're greeted by choices that display your personality. Your wardrobe becomes a powerful tool for expressing yourself fully, radiating and facing the day with confidence, delivering your current style, your message, your aspirations. Consistency between your style and your identity boosts your confidence. Your decluttered wardrobe reveals your personality, the new version of yourself! A breath of fresh air!
Now it's time to honor those well-chosen, beautiful clothes by organizing them with care. Whatever the size of your wardrobe, whether it's a small closet or a vast walk-in closet, here are some organizational tips to maximize your space and show off your clothes to their best advantage. Here are a few tips to help you make the most of it.
How do you organize your clothes?
The first step is to group your clothes by category:
- Tops: sweaters, t-shirts, blouses, jackets.
- Bottoms: skirts, pants, shorts.
- Dresses and/or one-piece sets.
- Other categories: accessories, sportswear, workwear, etc., depending on our needs.
If you feel like it, you can even organize each category by color!
Incorporating organization by color can not only make the process of selecting our clothes easier, but also add a visually pleasing touch to your closet.
To begin the formal organization, it's up to you to determine what you prefer to fold and hang. Select an appropriate place for each category and keep in mind the length of the garments you'll be hanging. For example, dresses will need more height than shirts. Hang as many garments as possible: they'll be more accessible and easily identifiable. Make sure the clothes you wear most often are within easy reach for maximum accessibility. Put the clothes you wear less often and/or out of season up high.
The smaller the wardrobe, the more important it is to optimize it. You can save a lot of space by going vertical. Opt for hooks on the inside of the doors to hang your accessories, or use your pole to add fabric modules that offer various little compartments, really good for putting clothes, shoes, etc. in. It's up to you, depending on your needs.
If you have a large wardrobe, it's ideal to centralize all your clothes in one place, as this simplifies the selection of your daily outfits and saves you time by avoiding seasonal wardrobe changes.
I prefer to fold woollens, T-shirts, sportswear and jeans. We generally hang clean shirts, jackets, dresses, skirts and pants. There is a growing choice of hangers, here are my 2 favorites;
Wood:
- Aesthetically pleasing
- Support heavy clothing well
- Less likely to leave marks on clothing.
Velvet :
- Offer extra grip to prevent clothes from slipping off
- Are thin and take up less space
- Ideal for delicate fabrics such as silk or satin
- Now available in many colors
- Less suitable for heavy garments.
On the shelf(s) at the top of the closet, you can use organizing accessories such as pretty bins to fold and place your t-shirts, jeans and sportswear. To select the bins best suited to your space, it's advisable to take precise measurements of your shelves (width, length and depth) so you can make judicious choices for maximum optimization.
Marie Kondo's folding method makes it easy to see the contents of our drawer, or our pretty basket. As you can see, the clothes are folded and inserted vertically into the Emma basket.
Depending on your size and style, I like the following models for jeans and t-shirts;
Drawer dividers are now available, for easy sorting and stacking of wool sweaters, jeans, comfy pants or sports pants, with a Marie Kondo fold.
No matter how you do it, identifying what's in your wardrobe is a good way to know exactly where our pieces are and easily put them back in the right place.
If floor space allows, you can add small shoe racks for your lesser-used shoes. It could also have the option of a drawer unit where you can put your accessories like watches, sunglasses, bracelets, scarves, belts, etc.
Each wardrobe has its own personality, characterized both by its size and by the diversity of its contents. It's up to you to discover how you can transform this space to make it more functional and enjoyable.
In conclusion, a well-organized wardrobe isn't simply a pile of tidy clothes, but rather a place where serenity and efficiency reign. It offers the opportunity to start each day with clarity and confidence, allowing everyone to reflect their style and personality with ease. Investing time in wardrobe organization is an investment in daily well-being, because a tidy room means a tidier life.
